Many sources have the name Mazzarino derive from the term Mazzara, as a transformation of the ancient toponymy name Makterium. The center rose during the Middle Ages, in the surroundings of an Arab castle. In 1143, Manfredi became Mazzarino's first lord. In 1304, it was bestowed to the dynasty of the Branciforte family.
