The Sacred Monastery-Castle of Calatrava la Nueva in Aldea del Rey, built in the thirteenth century, has three walled enclosures and a church belonging to the monastery that the Order maintained there. Not far away are the ruins of Salvatierra Castle in Calzada de Calatrava, built over an Islamic fortress, which in turn was erected on a Roman site.
