This is my favorite American mansion, as much for it's beauty as for the sad, but sweetly romantic story associated with it.
Boldt castle was built on an island in the St. Lawrence river by George Boldt (owner of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC). It was to be the "dream home" of Boldt and his wife ... and it is certainly that: it's located in an amazingly beautiful location and Boldt actually had the whole ISLAND reshaped to resemble a heart, and of course the architecture itself is breathtaking (if you want to see a real castle in North America, forget Disneyworld ... go here!)
Unfortunately, the wife suddenly died just weeks before the castle was finished. Boldt ordered all work stopped INSTANTLY, and the castle, with its upper floors unfinished, sat vacant for 50 years, almost falling into ruin.
